+ What should I check first if my garage door will not open?
Check that the opener has power, that the lock button on the wall control is not switched on, that the remote has a working battery, and that the small sensor lenses near the floor are clean and facing each other. If the door feels very heavy when you release it from the opener, or you heard a loud bang, stop and call.
+ Is it safe to replace a garage door spring myself?
We advise against it. Springs hold a great deal of tension, and winding or removing one without the right tools and training can cause serious injury. The same goes for the cables at the sides of the door. Keep the door closed, stop using the opener and call.
+ How do I tell whether the opener or the door is the problem?
Pull the release cord to disconnect the door from the opener, with the door fully closed. If the door then lifts easily by hand and stays open at waist height, the door hardware is probably fine and the opener is the likely cause. If the door is very heavy or sticks, the problem is in the springs, cables or tracks.
+ Can I open a stuck garage door by hand?
Sometimes. The opener has a release cord for this, but it is only safe when the door is closed and the springs are intact. If a spring is broken, the door is crooked or a cable is loose, do not try it.
